Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant that directly affects the brain. Cocaine has been labeled the drug of the 1980s and '90s, because of its extensive popularity and use during this period. However, cocaine is not a new drug. In fact, it is one of the oldest known drugs. The pure chemical, cocaine hydrochloride, has been an abused substance for more than 100 years, and coca leaves, the source of cocaine, have been ingested for thousands of years. There are basically two chemical forms of cocaine: the hydrochloride salt and the "freebase." The hydrochloride salt, or powdered form of cocaine, dissolves in water and, when abused, can be taken intravenously (by vein) or intranasal (in the nose). Freebase refers to a compound that has not been neutralized by an acid to make the hydrochloride salt. The freebase form of cocaine is smokable.

‘Meth’ is short for methamphetamine which is a whit crystalline drug that can be taken by snorting, injecting, smoking, and at times orally. It is extremely addictive and can create uncontrollable cravings even after only one use. Despite the raiding and closing of the majority of clandestine meth labs in this country, there are a few that survive and the void has definitely been filled by foreign drug cartels operating in the U.S. making meth readily available and easily affordable. For this reason meth addiction continues to climb at epidemic levels and has spread to all corners of the country. One is literally taking their lives in the hands right from the very first use.

Mental as well as physical dependence both fall under the label of drug addictions. These occur when one no longer feels able to control their use despite harm or damage being caused to self or others. There is sometimes the mistaken idea that unless a drug or substance causes physical addiction it is not addictive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Mental drug addictions can be just as debilitating to the individual as physical ones, at times even more so. Personal issues of nutrition and gaining a healthy balance need to be addressed. Issues of cravings, quilt, and depression resulting from addiction need confronted and relieved, legal issues often exist. Broken or strained relationships in the family and workplace need resolved. The issue of how the addict gets on with his life in a drug free and productive manner, and be happy and fulfilled doing so, can be one of the biggest issues of all.
